Clinical Study on the Effect of Cefaclor

Abstract
Ceclor¢ç (cefaclor, Lilly) is one of semi synthetic cephalosporin antibiotics, (3-chloro-7-D(2 Phenylglycinamido)-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid), for oral administration. Its activity is similar to that of cephalexin but is more active against gram-negative bacteria such as Proteus mirabilis and especially against Haemophilus influenzae, including ampicillin-resistant strains, and against Neisseria gonorrheae.
Fifty six cases with active inflammatory diseases in the department of otolaryngology in SNUH from September 1985 through May 1986 were treated with Cefaclor to evaluate the efficacy of this drug following culture and sensitivity tests.
Case materials were 15 chronic otitis media, 9 acute otitis media, 12 serous otitis media, 5 acute tonsillitis, 8 acute sinusitis, 2 acute laryngitis, 2 acute parotitis, and 3 cases with cervical abscess.
Bacterial culture revealed positive in 38 cases. Sensitivity test showed that all organisms were sensitive to Cefaclor except all 5 Pseudomonas aerugincsa, and 1 out of 8 S. aureus and 1 out of 3 Proteus mirabilis.
Daily dose of Cefaclor was 750-1500mg in adults and 20-40mg/kg body weight in pediatric cases in three divided doses.
Cefaclor was effective in 43 cases and partially effective in 7 cases out of 51 cases studied, with a result of effectiveness in 98% of cases in this study.
Cefaclor was also evaluated as effective in all 6 positive culture cases out of 9 cases with acute otitis media.
